Woodcarving
In 1970, between semesters at UConn, I had an urge to carve a small decoy. I grabbed a scrap 2X4 and with jack-knife in hand, I proceeded to carve away all the wood that didn’t look like a decoy. The end result was less than spectacular, but I was hooked.
Thus began my fascination with the process…the feel of a tool in my hand, the complexity of the grain, the serenity of working in my studio.
Until recently, I have done this as a hobby, but I am now able to devote more time and effort in developing this creative endeavor. Landscape Design is my profession and I view it as “sculpting the land”. I feel a sense of connection to nature through the medium of wood, whether it be in dealing with trees and plant material within the landscape or in the creation of a piece of sculpture. Eric Sloane, artist and author of many books on Americana, best describes this feeling…a reverence for wood!
