I experience wheel-throwing as a process of the clay and me working together to breathe life and personality into formless mass. This process brings both the clay and me to life in the moment and it also allows people to experience clay as objects they can relate to and use. It is a great pleasure to witness people responding to my pottery with curiosity and to see what it evokes in them.
Functional, everyday pots can draw awareness to the moment of drinking coffee, serving a salad, using a sponge, or cooking utensil. Funky, distorted pieces may increase this possibility by calling attention to form.
Playfulness is key for me, openness to all I don’t know or understand, releasing illusion of control. Surrendering to the process of interacting with clay which also has a mind of its own, trusting that the flow of interacting will take us to delightfully surprising places we couldn’t imagine beforehand, only revealed as we go.
