Jon Wilson - Woodturning
My journey is focused on wood turning. I began turning as a teenager and am still learning. I learned the basics and progressed to harvesting my own timber and creating unique bowls and platters. The teachings from my father greatly shaped my progress with access to better, and more difficult forms. My father was a woodshop teacher for over 35 years. He had a MFA from Rochester Institute of Technology and sold his furniture worldwide. Through experience and repetition, with exposure to fellow wood turners, my forms have progressed. Each year I take week-long courses with turning experts. I have traveled internationally and will continue to increase my exposure to new and interesting forms.
The final form is always on my mind. Form, balance, shape, defects, sanding and finish are components to a useful and practical bowl or platter. While the ultimate final use of the form I make determines the finish, I generally work with food safe finishes.
As well as harvesting trees, I have a number of kilns to dry wood and reduce the drying time of timber. This greatly helps the twice turned timber dry times. I have capabilities to core my bowl blanks as well. This helps to increase yield and reduces time and refuse at the lathe.

Recently, the bespoke timber harvesting seems to be growing. I receive many calls from clients requesting I turn a bowl from a piece of timber that was on their property. This can be an initial inquiry to turn a bowl from a hunk of wood transferred to my shop, to harvesting a tree with sawyer experts and setting up slabs, blanks and drying timber for the client to use.
